Diaper Rash

Soothe and protect your baby’s skin with gentle, pharmacist-recommended diaper treatments.

Treating and Preventing Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a common form of inflamed skin (dermatitis) that appears as a patchwork of bright red skin on a baby’s bottom. It is most often caused by prolonged contact with a wet or soiled diaper, friction, or the introduction of new foods. While usually not serious, diaper rash can be uncomfortable for babies and distressing for parents. Most cases resolve quickly with proper treatment and preventive care. Your PharmaChoice pharmacist can recommend safe and effective products for your baby.

Signs of Diaper Rash

Symptoms include red, tender skin in the diaper area (buttocks, thighs, and genitals); the baby appearing uncomfortable, especially during diaper changes; skin that looks puffy or feels warm to the touch; and in severe cases, sores or blisters. A rash with raised red borders or satellite spots may indicate a yeast infection.

How Your Pharmacist Can Help

Your PharmaChoice pharmacist can recommend the most appropriate barrier creams, zinc oxide ointments, or antifungal creams depending on the type and severity of the rash. They can also advise on diaper changing frequency, skin care techniques, and when to consult a doctor for persistent or worsening rashes.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about diaper rash, including the best treatments, how to prevent it, and when a rash may be a sign of something more serious.

What causes diaper rash?

Diaper rash is most commonly caused by prolonged exposure to a wet or soiled diaper, friction from the diaper, sensitivity to wipes or diaper products, antibiotic use, or the introduction of new foods that change the composition of stool.

What is the best treatment for diaper rash?

Zinc oxide-based barrier creams are the most commonly recommended treatment for diaper rash. They create a protective layer on the skin to prevent further irritation and allow healing. Apply a thick layer at each diaper change.

How can I prevent diaper rash?

Change diapers frequently to minimize skin contact with moisture, use fragrance-free wipes, apply a barrier cream at each change, allow the baby's skin to air dry before putting on a new diaper, and ensure the diaper is not too tight.

Could my baby's diaper rash be a yeast infection?

Yes. A yeast diaper rash caused by Candida typically appears as a bright red rash with raised borders and small red spots (satellite lesions) beyond the main rash area. It often occurs after antibiotic use and does not respond to regular diaper rash creams. An antifungal cream is needed.

When should I take my baby to the doctor for a diaper rash?

Speak with your pharmacist or health-care provider if your baby’s diaper rash is severe, accompanied by fever, develops blisters or open sores, or appears to be spreading beyond the diaper area. You should also seek further assessment if the rash does not improve or gets worse after 7 days of appropriate treatment. In some cases, pharmacists may be able to assess the rash and prescribe treatment options when appropriate.
